Born and raised in Puerto Rico, Karen has always loved to travel and experience other cultures and places, especially their food, art and music. She also enjoys exercise and often takes her dog running, walking, kayaking, and traveling with her.
Karen enlisted in the Marine Corps shortly after 9/11. Her primary occupation specialty was administration and logistics but also served in other capacities. Stationed overseas in Japan, Karen is grateful to experience different cultures through travel and training. She also deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and was stationed in California, Florida, and North Carolina.
Karen believes that staying active is key to progress. In the years since her service, Karen his discovered that engaging in her community among fellow veterans is essential in her overall wellbeing. Now in the process of building a veteran resource network, Karen wants to provide information about programs and benefits that are available to the veteran community and their families.
Karen’s No Barriers experiences to date have become a catalyst in her mission reaching out to others. After her first expedition, Karen became motivated to stay active because it inspired her to maintain a healthy and active lifestyle, two commitments that overtime helped her improve her overall quality of life. Through her continued participation with No Barriers, she hopes to continue to help others by example.
